Part 2: On the Job

These are real situations our housekeepers run into. Pick the answer closest to what you would actually do.

You arrive for a turnover and the hot tub was left filthy and smells strongly. The next guest checks in in 90 minutes. What do you do? *

Skip the hot tub, clean everything else, and hope it isn't noticed.
Clean it as thoroughly as time allows and immediately text your supervisor to flag it, so a call can be made before the guest arrives.
Try to fix it completely on your own, even if the rest of the property runs behind schedule.
Leave and reschedule the whole turnover since you don't have hot tub chemicals.

While cleaning, you find a guest's phone still charging on the nightstand. What do you do? *

Turn it in through the lost-and-found process right away and note where you found it.
Leave it exactly where it is in case they come back for it.
Take it with you and figure out what to do with it later.
Post in a guest group chat asking who it belongs to.

You arrive to start a turnover and the previous guests are still inside, 45 minutes past checkout. What do you do? *

Let yourself in anyway. It's officially checkout time.
Politely knock, explain you're there to start cleaning, and check with your supervisor about the next guest's arrival time while they finish up.
Leave without saying anything and don't come back.
Confront the guests about being late.

You find clear signs a pet stayed in a listing marked pet-free, and there's damage and odor to deal with. What do you do? *

Clean it and say nothing. It's not your job to police guests.
Document the damage with photos before cleaning, then report it through the normal channel.
Refuse to clean the property until management resolves it.
Clean it and mention it to the next housekeeper verbally if you happen to see them.

Partway through your shift, it's clear you won't finish before the next guest's check-in. What do you do? *

Quietly rush and skip a few lower-priority steps without mentioning it.
As soon as you realize you're behind, text your supervisor with your best estimate of your finish time.
Push through and finish everything, however long it takes, without telling anyone.
Stop early and leave the rest for the next person.

You notice a strong marijuana smell in a listing that prohibits smoking. What do you do? *

Spray air freshener and don't mention it.
Air out the property, clean as usual, and report it through the standard smoking-violation process.
Ignore it. It's not a big deal.
Mention it to the next guest who checks in.

You find what looks like drug paraphernalia or a weapon in a nightstand drawer. What do you do? *

Throw it away quietly and keep cleaning.
Stop, avoid handling it further, and notify your supervisor right away.
Keep cleaning around it and deal with it at the end.
Take a photo to show a friend later.

A guest calls your personal phone upset that the property "isn't as clean as the pictures," while you're mid-shift at another property. What do you do? *

Tell them it's not something you can deal with right now.
Calmly listen, apologize for their experience, and let them know your supervisor will follow up right away.
Explain in detail everything you personally cleaned to defend yourself.
Let it go to voicemail and deal with it later.

You accidentally break a lamp or piece of decor while cleaning. What do you do? *

Say nothing and hope it isn't noticed.
Report it right away, even though it means admitting the mistake.
Assume the last housekeeper probably already broke it.
Quietly replace it yourself so it's handled, without mentioning it.

You're sent to a property alone for a late-evening emergency turnover, and something about the situation feels unsafe. What do you do? *

Push through and finish the job anyway.
Trust your instinct, leave, and call your supervisor to explain and reschedule.
Keep working while texting a friend for advice.
Confront whatever seems off yourself.

The lockbox code you were given doesn't work and you can't get into the property. What do you do? *

Leave without telling anyone.
Try any backup entry method you know, and if that fails, call your supervisor right away rather than waiting.
Force the door open.
Wait outside indefinitely in case someone shows up.

Part 3: Cleaning & Safety Knowledge

Some of these you may already know. Others we will train you on. Answer with your best judgment.

Before mixing any cleaning chemicals, you should: *

Combine bleach and ammonia-based products for tougher stains.
Never mix chemicals. Read labels and ventilate the space instead.
Mix a little of everything if you're not sure what will work.
Only worry about it if the smell is strong.

If you find a needle or other sharp object while cleaning, you should: *

Pick it up carefully with a paper towel and throw it in the regular trash.
Avoid handling it with bare hands, use gloves and a proper container, and report it immediately.
Leave it exactly where it is and finish cleaning around it.
Sweep it outside.

Soiled linens collected during a turnover should be: *

Folded the same as clean linens to save time.
Bagged and kept separate from clean linens until collection.
Left on the bed until the next housekeeper arrives.
Washed on-site in the property's washer whenever possible.

You test a smoke detector during a routine clean and the battery is dead. You should: *

Leave it. That's a maintenance issue, not a housekeeping one.
Replace the battery if you have one on hand, and note it either way.
Mention it to the guest when they check in.
Remove the detector so it stops beeping.

The best way to avoid cross-contamination between the bathroom and kitchen is to: *

Use the same cloth throughout, rinsing it in between.
Use separate, designated cloths or tools for each area.
Clean the kitchen last regardless of what's used.
It doesn't matter as long as both end up looking clean.

You notice what looks like mold or water damage behind a shower wall. You should: *

Scrub it with bleach until it's gone.
Stop, avoid disturbing it further, and photograph and report it right away.
Cover it with a shower curtain and continue cleaning.
Note it in your head and mention it whenever you next see your supervisor.

If a task seems unsafe to do alone (heavy furniture, a ladder, etc.), the right move is to: *

Push through carefully by yourself.
Stop and ask for help or a two-person lift before continuing.
Skip the task entirely without mentioning why.
Improvise a workaround so you don't have to ask.

Lockbox codes and property access information should be: *

Shared with anyone on your team who might need to help out someday.
Kept confidential, and reported immediately if you think a code may be compromised.
Written on the inside of your car visor for quick access.
Shared with guests directly if they ask, to save time.

Part 5: Planning Your Day

Vacation rentals are different from hotels. Check-ins are same-day and back-to-back, and there is no front desk to catch a problem. These questions are about planning ahead.

You have three turnovers today, all with an 11:00 AM checkout and a 4:00 PM check-in. Each takes about 75 minutes with two people, and you have one helper. Working together as a two-person team, can you finish all three by 4:00 PM? *

Yes, easily, with lots of time to spare.
It's very tight. Three turnovers back-to-back is about 3 hours 45 minutes, which only fits if you start right at 11:00 with no travel time between properties. The right move is to flag the tight timeline to your supervisor in advance.
No, and there's nothing that can be done about it.
It depends only on how fast you personally clean.

You're assigned two properties today: one 20 minutes away, one 35 minutes away. Both have an 11:00 AM checkout and both need to be ready for a 4:00 PM check-in. What's the best approach? *

Do whichever one you feel like first.
Plan your route and rough timing before you start, accounting for drive time between the two, and communicate early if the math looks tight.
Do the closer one twice as fast to make up time.
Skip planning and just start driving and figure it out.

A 3-bedroom home needs 6 towels per bathroom, and it has 2 bathrooms. How many towels do you need in total? *
